BBVA chairman Francisco González hosted and participated in a top-level meeting on economic affairs in preparation for the forthcoming Ibero-American Summit of heads of state and government. The event took place at the Marqués de Salamanca Palace, an iconic BBVA building in Madrid.

Mr. González welcomed the heads of delegations from the countries participating in the Ibero-American Summit including the Spanish Minister for Economy and Competitiveness, Luis de Guindos, as well as business leaders and institutional representatives from both sides of the Atlantic.
During his address BBVA’s chairman said Latin America’s solid growth has helped to reduce the gravity of the global crisis. BBVA Research expects the region to grow at nearly 4% per annum in the coming years. “The economic potential of the relationship between Latin America and Spain is huge,” Mr. González said.

He emphasized that “BBVA is stronger than ever. We have overcome this crisis without any public aid or sales of strategic assets and we have continued to generate profits. We are strongly capitalized and we continue to grow.” He added that these achievements are due to a strategy based on a diversified business model, strongly leveraged on principles, people and innovation.

In his opinion, “Latin America has been and still is a key factor in determining the strength of the BBVA Group during the crisis. We have a strategic commitment to Latin America and the region has our full support.”
