Domingo Armengol, new Secretary General and Secretary to the BBVA Board of Directors

Domingo Armengol has been appointed new Secretary General and Secretary to the BBVA Board of Directors. Mr. Armengol, aged 44, was previously Vice Secretary and will now become Permanent Secretary of the Executive Committee. Armengol’s appointment comes after the BBVA Board agreed on the early retirement of José Maldonado as executive and consequently his departure as Secretary General and Secretary to the Board. Mr. Maldonado, aged 57, will continue as a Non-executive Director, while Mr. Armengol will not sit on the Board.
Members of BBVA’s Board thanked Mr. Maldonado for his loyal service over the past 13 years, during which time the group has become one of world’s leading financial institutions. The Board of Directors highlighted Mr. Armengol’s experience and his in-depth knowledge of the group and its Board.
A law graduate, Domingo Armengol has previously been head of BBVA’s Institutional Advisory department and Vice Secretary of the Board of Directors since 2000. Mr. Armengol joined the BBVA Group in 1997 as head of the Corporate Legal Advisory department at Argentaria. Previously he had worked in the legal departments of various companies, such as Iberia and Iber-Swiss, and has practiced mercantile, civil and administrative law privately.
A state attorney, José Maldonado joined the BBVA Group in April 1997 as Director and Secretary General. Before that, he held managerial positions in various companies.
