Today, BBVA in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence, presented an accident insurance policy for Spanish military personnel on peace missions all over the world. BBVA, through its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, will pay for these insurance policies. At present, Spanish troops are serving in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Chad, and Lebanon, in addition to the personnel that are serving in the EU’s Atalanta operation against piracy in the waters off of Somalia. Since 1989, a total of over 100,000 Spanish troops have participated in over 50 international and humanitarian aid missions on four continents.

This initiative highlights the close collaboration that BBVA has historically maintained with the Ministry of Defence. Against this backdrop, the BBVA New Defence Insurance (Nuevo Seguro Defensa BBVA) represents a step forward in this ongoing relationship. Its main aim is to support Spanish troops stationed abroad.

“BBVA is extremely satisfied to be able to support Spanish soldiers on peace missions. Their sacrifice and abnegation is an example for all of Spanish society”, explained Antoni Ballabriga, director of BBVA Corporate Responsibility and Reputation.

Features of the New Defence Insurance

BBVA provides the New Defence Insurance free of charge to all Spanish military personnel on peace missions in any country in the world. The only prerequisite is that the Spanish soldiers must have their salary accounts domiciled at BBVA.

 In addition, it will include:

  • War risk coverage, except for incidents classified as acts of terrorism
  • Terrorist attack coverage covered by the Insurance Compensation Consortium
