BBVA’S ABIL ATM receives the 2011 silver IDEA award for the best corporate design
BBVA’s prototype ABIL ATM, designed by IDEO, has received the 2011 silver award conferred by the International Design Excellence Awards, IDEA, the world’s leading international design competition. The award, in the category of commercial and industrial products, recognizes companies, like BBVA, that understand the value of excellent design in making their customers’ lives easier.
The project that resulted in the ABIL prototype kicked off in 2006, when BBVA developed the idea of building more “human” ATMs, that were more familiar and easier to use. To develop this project, the bank joined forces with IDEO, world leader in ‘design thinking’ to create a system based on customers’ needs. It worked with NCR (manufacturing and production) and Fujitsu (applications, interface and self service), to ensure the original design was maintained throughout the engineering, construction and start up phase of the new ATM. Microsoft, Intel, DNX and other companies also took part in the project.
The ABIL ATM was designed on the basis of experience and observations of how people behaved at ATMs in branch offices in Spain, Mexico and the US. This led to the creation of a prototype that shows significant improvements in personalizing operations, the sense of security and privacy and in terms of ergonomics. The result was an ATM designed to achieve a competitive advantage. The first prototype was tested in late 2007 and today there are 11 pilot ATMs operating in central Madrid.
At the start of this year, 20 leading world design experts assessed thousands of international projects submitted from 39 countries and the winners were selected over two days during an exhibition held at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, USA in April.
For 31 years, the International Design Excellence awards (IDEA) have recognized excellence in the design of products, their sustainability, interactive features, packaging, strategy, research and concepts, thereby becoming the world’s leading design competition. Samsung, Apple, Decathlon and Dell have received the most awards over the past five years, while IDEO has won 32 prizes and is the most recognized consulting firm.
The awards ceremony will be held on September 17 at the Hotel Roosevelt in New Orleans. The IDEA ceremony and annual award winners will play a leading role in the Conferencia de 2011 IDSA Internacional, COMUNIDAD: You.Me.We, that will attract between 800 and 1000 visitors including design professionals, business leaders, educators, students and the international media.
