Ángel Cano Fernández was appointed President and COO of the BBVA Group in September 2009.
Ángel Cano has worked for the BBVA Group for the past 18 years. During this time he has held various senior positions, particularly in the financial area and in HR management and IT where he has driven the bank's transformation plans in recent years.
- BBVA's new President and COO began his career at Arthur Andersen where he worked for seven years, specializing in finance.
- In 1991 he joined Argentaria as Controller where he developed and coordinated the bank's control functions. In 1998 he joined the Executive Committee at Argentaria.
- Following the merger between BBV and Argentaria, Ángel Cano held various management positions and in 2000 joined BBVA's Executive Committee.
- In April 2001 he was appointed group Financial Director before taking over leadership of the Human Resources and Services department in January 2003'.
- In December 2005 he was put in charge of the group's IT area, being appointed head of Resources.
- While there, Mr. Cano was responsible for developing and rolling out the group's Global Transformation Plan which has seen BBVA head the international banking sector in terms of efficiency and profitability.
Ángel Cano was born in Santander in 1961 and holds a degree in Economics and Business Studies by the Oviedo University.
